Essential Piece of the Puzzle

Matthew Sauceda has been with the ASI family from his undergraduate degree to his master’s in public policy, and the organization has benefited greatly from his dedication. This year marks Sauceda’s ninth year working for Associated Students, and four years into his full-time employment. Thankfully for ASI, he doesn’t plan on leaving any time soon.

As the SRWC’s administrative and facility coordinator, Matthew oversees the building managers and all facility rentals for the center. One of the largest components of his job is to broaden students’ perspectives and open them up to development opportunities, a challenge he relishes.

Matt finds the best way to prepare his students for what’s next is to challenge them to think through difficult and emergency situations. “Building managers are really the ones who are the first responders to a scene. So whether it’s an incident that happened within the facility or an injury, helping to prepare those students to deal with these types of situations is really important – especially in the SRWC where anyone can get hurt at any time.”

Helping students understand how to handle various types of difficult situations is important to him. To Matt, these are the workforce skills that are needed and transferable to what they may do after graduation. “Management skills are used in every profession, usually on a day-to-day basis, so I want to equip them with things that will be valuable to them.”

Beyond developing his students and maintaining many facets of the facility, Matthew is also continually working on a project with the SRWC and USU – trying to eliminate the use of paper by transferring paper forms into digital applications. Overall, Matthew is looking forward to many years to come with ASI and is honored for being chosen for the Essential Piece of the Puzzle.
