Temporary COVID-19 Regulations on Student Organization, Travel, and Research Funding
The Board of Control (BOC) will not approve grants for programming that may increase
the risk of jeopardizing students' health. The board will be guided by local, state, California State University
(CSU), and CSULB-specific (University) guidelines when considering grant applications.
What are ASI Grant Funds?
Each year, the Associated Students Inc. allocates funds to support student organizations, club sport
organizations, college councils, and individual students are groups seeking support for research and travel
activities. This FAQ applies to all those categories.
What is the BOC?
BOC stands for Board of Control, and this is the committee within ASI that governs the fiscal and personnel
affairs of the organizations. One of BOC’s primary responsibilities is to support student involvement through
the distribution of funds sought through grant applications.
Why has the BOC implemented a temporary funding policy?
The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic reaches many of ASI’s and student organizations’ activities. Following the
CSU’s travel restriction announcement and the university’s prohibition on in-person events, the BOC was required
to revisit its normal grant funding decisions and practices in order to ensure compliance with new regulations
and to ensure the health and safety of CSULB students involved in grant-funded activities.
I haven’t seen the CSU’s travel restriction. What does that mean?
The CSU Chancellor announced a restriction on all non-essential travel through the spring 2021 semester. This
restriction applies to students and student activities out of the Long Beach region.
What will happen with my 2020 Spring Grant Award?
If your organization was awarded a grant in Spring 2020 these funds are currently not to be used as
proposed. Due to the restriction of on campus events through the fall semester, the BOC is holding these
funds back for all organizations.
Guidance for Spring 2021 events and programs will be communicated at a later date.
Can my organization still use funds in its agency account?
These funds are owned by the organization and not by ASI. Any funds in an agency account may be used according to the guidelines of the organization’s Constitution and Bylaws. Transactions against an agency account require approval by the organization’s SLD Advisor who will ensure that expenses are made in accordance with campus policies/guidelines, including those related to Covid-19, and follow an ethical and responsible use of organization funding.
What if my organization received a donation from a private entity?
The organization may still receive these funds. The same process is to be followed. The money will reside in
the organization’s agency account and therefore is accessible to the organization.
Is the $300 grant a one-time grant?
As of now, the BOC has only considered this award as a one-time award for the fall semester. Look out for
more information as the semester proceeds and COVID-19/ University regulations are updated. In order to access the $300, student organizations must e-mail their SLD Advisor indicating how they intend to use the funds, then work with that Advisor to submit an ASI Check Request in order to get reimbursed once expenses have been made.
Will the Temporary Policy be in place for Spring 2021?
The BOC has not made any decisions regarding Spring 2021 funding. If your organizations are uncertain as to
planning for the spring semester, please await additional information coming from University and/or local

SPRING GRANT ALLOCATION INFORMATION
The Associated Students, Incorporated (ASI) provides a wide variety of programs and services to enhance the
educational experiences of CSULB students. As part of this effort, we offer grants to student organizations for
the production of events and activities that will meet the needs and interests of the student body. Through
this application, ASI invites student organizations to request funding for campus events and activities
scheduled for the 2020-2021 academic year. This includes summer session 2020, fall semester 2020, and spring
semester 2021. Please note that priority for funding will be given to recurring events and activities.

The Board of Control develops and recommends to the AS Senate policy in the areas of finance,
human resources, and the administration of business affairs between the Associated Students and other parties.
The Board also prepares and recommends to the AS Senate the annual operating budget of ASI. After the annual
budget has been approved, the Board of Control is responsible for monitoring and recommending modifications to
the budget. All action of the Board of Control is subject to AS Senate approval. The Board of Control is chaired
