ELECTED POSITIONS

Associated Students President

Position Overview:

Serve as the Chief Executive Officer of the Associated Students and the official representative of the Associated Students to the university and the general public.

What does this position do?

  • Ensure the proper conduct and efficient administration of all ASI Executive Branch activities and reports weekly to the Senate.
  • Review, sign, and ensure the execution of all legislation adopted by the Senate.
  • Appoint students to open positions including Academic Affairs Officer, Chief Diversity Officer, Chief Government Relations Officer, Chief Justice, Associate Justices, and commissioners, subject to confirmation by the Senate.
  • Deliver a State of the Associated Students Address no later than 30 days after the start of each semester in office.
  • Conduct mid-year Cabinet performance reviews with the Chief Diversity Officer.
  • Deliver speeches at Convocation, Homecoming and other functions, as needed.
  • Attend university and ASI functions, as needed.
  • Serve on ASI scholarship review committees as needed.

Associated Students Vice President

Position Overview:

Serve as the chairperson of the Associated Students Senate/Board of Directors, which is the voice of the students, and assumes the office of ASI President upon the President’s incapacitation, resignation, or withdrawal from the University.

What does this position do?

  • Assist the ASI President with ASI business as deemed necessary by that officer.
  • Prepare the weekly Senate agenda.
  • Prepare, sign, and place final adopted legislation on the desk of the ASI President for their signature or reconsideration.
  • Develop and author legislation, ans assist senators in the creation of legislation.
  • Make all A.S. Senate information available and accessible to the student body.
  • Conduct Senate performance reviews.
  • Support Senate projects and goals, and assign projects to senators when necessary.
  • Ensure that board members are knowledgeable and properly trained on their role and responsibilities.
  • Serve on ASI scholarship review committees as needed.

Associated Students Treasurer

Position Overview:

Oversee the administration of Associated Students finances and ensures prudent management of its assets.

What does this position do?

  • Serve as Chair of the Board of Control.
  • Compile and create Board of Control agenda packets with all business items 72-hours prior to meetings.
  • Review all Research Grants, Student Research Funds, and Current Year Unallocated Fund applications to ensure proper paperwork and information has been provided prior to placing it on the Board of Control agenda.
  • Ensure that financial literacy training is provided for the broad student population throughout each academic year.
  • Ensure fiscal certification training is completed for all student organization financial officers.
  • Make monthly reports to the Senate including a detailed account of the financial condition of the Associated Students on a quarterly basis.
  • Approve disbursements made from Associated Students checking accounts.
  • Review fiscal policies annually, and makes recommendations as necessary.
  • Update the Program Grant Rubric to meet any policy updates.
  • Ensure that board members are knowledgeable and trained on fiscal policies and other Board of Control items.
  • Meet with students and organizations to review policy, assist with grant applications and address financial questions.
  • Maintain a current record of all fiscal and personnel policies and procedures approved by the Senate.
  • Communicate with students, councils/organizations, Student Life & Development and the ASI Business Office regarding policies and procedures.
  • Build and maintain a relationship with Student Life & Development and meets each semester with the staff.
  • Develop and implement a comprehensive spring grant allocation process in collaboration with Student Life & Development and the Board of Control.
  • Reconcile the Board of Control’s accounting records of Associated Students, and provides report to the Senate.
  • Oversee the preparation of the Associated Students annual budget and receive the budget from the USU Board of Trustees.
  • Play an active role in the development of the ASI budget process.
  • Provide check-ins with Senate representatives to the Board of Control.
  • Ensure the ASI website has up-to-date financial statements.

Position Overview:

Serve as a voting member of the Associated Students Senate, representing the students within a particular College or the student community at-large.

What does this position do?

  • Represent members of their particular constituency to the Associated Students.
  • Serve as a member of the Board of Directors of the Associated Students, Incorporated and fulfill the legal and ethical obligations attending.
  • Participate in initiating amendments to the Articles of Incorporation and ASI Bylaws, Chapter I, to be voted on by the student body.
  • Participate in approving amendments to the ASI Bylaws, Chapter II.
  • Fill vacancies in the Senate and other Boards.
  • Hold membership on at least one Senate subcommittee and/or ASI Subsidiary Board.
  • Serve on university committees and boards at the direction of the Vice President.
  • Serve as a volunteer for ASI events.
  • Compose and present resolutions to the Senate for consideration.
  • Submit Senator reports and University committee reports.
  • Attend College Council meetings and give reports on ASI activities (College Senators only).

Trustee-At-Large, University Student Union Board of Trustees

Position Overview:

Serve as a voting member of the University Student Union Board of Trustees (USUBOT), which is responsible for the oversight of the facilities, services and programs of the University Student Union (USU) and Student Recreation and Wellness Center (SRWC).

What does this position do?

  • Formulate and recommend policies regarding all aspects of USU and the SRWC operations.
  • Recommend the annual budget of the USU to the A.S. Senate.
  • Review services and programming for the USU & SRWC.
  • Recommend plans for additions and/or modifications to USU facilities
  • Ensure that all business conducted by the Board is carried out in the best interests of the student body as a whole.
  • Serve on at least one university committee as a student representative
  • Serve on ASI scholarship review committees as needed

What meetings will I have to attend?

  • USU Board of Trustees – 1st Friday of each month at 1PM.

APPOINTED POSITIONS

Academic Affairs Officer

Position Overview:

Serves as the chief advisor and senior policy maker on academic-related matters to the ASI President.

What does this position do?

  • Serves as a voting member on designated ASI and university committees, including the Academic Senate (Executive Council), Curriculum and Educational Policies Council, GE Governing Committee, GWAR Committee, and Instructionally Related Activities Board
  • Recruits general students & students within ASI for university academic committees
  • Provides orientation and training to appointed student representatives to various university committees in coordination with the Government Affairs Office staff.
  • Administers the ASI university committee reporting system, ensuring that notifications are sent to committee members of upcoming meetings and maintains communication, includes meeting regularly with student representatives
  • Collects reports from student representatives via the ASI university committee reporting system within 5 school days of the committee meeting, and maintains record consisting of compiled reports for each university academic committee
  • Reviews committee reports- analyzes and synthesizes findings, and notifies ASI President of key issues that require ASI’s attention.
  • Maintains a schedule for all university academic committee meetings and student representatives to each committee.
  • Updates the ASI President weekly on university academic committee related issues.
  • Administers annual student representative surveys by the first week in December and May; compiles findings with recommendations for the ASI Executive Officers

Chief Diversity Officer

Position Overview:

Serves as the ranking member of the ASI Presidential Cabinet and is the chief advisor and senior policy maker on diversity and social justice-related matters to the ASI President.

What does this position do?

  • Assists the President with interviewing students to open positions in the ASI Presidential Cabinet, subject to confirmation by the Senate.
  • Assists the ASI President in any capacity deemed necessary by that officer and assumes those duties delegated to the Presidential Cabinet, which are unfilled with Commissioners.
  • Serves as chair of the Presidential Cabinet, including facilitating the weekly board meetings, developing and distributing the meeting agenda
  • Supervises and assists members of the President’s Cabinet in advocating for their respective communities through programming and policy changes.
  • Coordinates and keeps accurate records of activities and performances of the President’s Cabinet, and submits such records to the ASI President in an end-of-the-year report
  • Serves as chair of the Social Justice & Equity Ad-Hoc Committee
  • Recruits general students for diversity/social justice-related university committees.
  • Advocates for and creates policy changes both on and off campus that will empower students of marginalized communities and enhance the diversity efforts of ASI.
  • Leads the planning and execution of the annual CSULB Students of Color Conference.
  • Further develops diversity and social justice programs from within ASI including the Queer Student Success Initiative and ally trainings.
  • Advises student leaders on diversity-related matters.
  • Ensures that ASI student government is building upon and adhering to its diversity and social justice efforts through programming, advocacy and policy making.

Chief Government Relations Officer

Position Overview:

Represents the interests of the Associated Students to the Cal State Student Association (CSSA), California State University system, and State legislators. Informs Associated Students about the budget, its legislative process and the state of the CSU. Serves as the chief advisor and senior policy maker on CSU system-related matters to the ASI President.

What does this position do?

  • Co-represents the university and ASI in the CSSA as a voting delegate
  • Provides a report on system-wide efforts in regards to university affairs, academic affairs, environmental affairs and legislative affairs to the ASI President
  • Films monthly CSSA recap videos after each CSSA meeting
  • Serves as chair of Lobby Corps, including facilitating weekly meetings, developing and distributing meeting agendas
  • Acts as the ASI President’s liaison to the CSU Board of Trustees and the CSU Chancellor’s Office in regards to matters affecting CSULB students.
  • Advocates legislation or issues on behalf of CSULB students, and facilitates the Corps’ operations.
  • Supervises, coordinates, assists and keeps accurate records of activities and performance of the Lobby Corps and submits such records to the ASI President in an end-of-the-year report.
  • Coordinates voter registration drives with Lobby Corps.
  • Acts as a campus representative to the community about the Student Involvement and Representation Fee (SIRF).
  • Assists in the coordination and training of the California Higher Education Student Summit (CHESS) student delegation.
  • Recruits and trains student volunteers to serve as part of the Lobby Corps.
  • Serves as the ASI President’s official designated representative to any board or committee of which they are a member.

Chief Justice

Position Overview:

Serves as the Chief member and convening chair of the ASI Judiciary advising on matters concerning infractions of the ASI Bylaws.

What does this position do?

  • Interprets the provisions of the ASI Bylaws or any other ASI document when a dispute arises
  • Serves as part of the Judiciary branch that renders decisions in election disputes and approves Elections Handbook
  • Assists the Government Elections Officer with monitoring campaign activities during elections
  • Processes ASI Appeal forms and convenes the Judiciary to adjudicate the appeal
  • Writes a majority opinion in collaboration with the Associate Justices and, if applicable a minority opinion, on all judiciary case decisions, which must be made readily available
  • Notifies all individual and group defendants of any complaint filed against them within two weekdays of the filed complaint
  • Reviews all actions or documents of any Associated Students, Inc. agency, body, organization, or office holder within the ASI upon filing of a petition
  • Serves as student representative on one of the seven college Grade Appeals Committees
  • Calls meetings of the Judiciary at least twice per month during the regular academic semester
  • Creates and distributes the Judiciary’s agenda and case docket

Position Overview:

Serves as the chief administrative officer of the regular and special elections of the Associated Students.

Position Overview:

The Commissioner for Environmental Justice advises the President’s Cabinet on matters of environmental justice issues in local communities and sustainability efforts affecting the campus.

Environmental justice is defined as the process of improving and seeking a cleaner and healthier environment for all communities. Environmental justice focuses on communities that are more prone to environmental degradation, including but not limited to lower income, and communities of color.

What does this position do?

  • Carries out the vision and goals of the ASI President
  • Assists in developing strategies to convey environmental justice and sustainability policies, goals, and initiatives for ASI, such as purchasing policies and practices
  • Advises the ASI President on the university’s Climate Action Plan, demonstrating a thorough understanding of the plan, staying current on its progress and accomplishments and identifying ways in which ASI can contribute
  • Collaborates with the University Student Union Board of Trustees to execute the provisions of the ASI Sustainability Policy, ensuring that ASI is adhering to the policy specifically greenhouse gas emission and zero waste goals, confirm that the annual sustainability report is submitted and present findings to Senate
  • When needed, work with Senate to develop resolutions addressing policy and systemic issues related to environmental justice

Commissioner for Wellness Affairs

Position Overview:

The Commissioner for Wellness Affairs promotes the cohesion and awareness of the variety of wellness programs on campus, in order to ensure that holistic wellness remains at the forefront of the university’s goals. Serves as a member of the President’s Cabinet advising on matters concerning wellness across the university.

What does this position do?

  • Carries out the vision and goals of the ASI President
  • Collaborates on programs with the Commissioner for Disability Affairs
  • Assists with the creation and promotion of wellness programs within Student Health Services, Beach Pride Events, Counseling & Psychological Services (CAPS), and Student Recreation & Wellness Center
  • Assists the Project OCEAN committee with the planning of Live Your Life Day
  • Assists the Dean of Students Office with the planning of the Health & Safety Fair (spring semester)
  • Collaborates with Lobby Corps on advocating for mental health and Basic Needs legislation

Commissioner for Women & Gender Equity Affairs

Position Overview:

The Commissioner for Women & Gender Equity Affairs works to increase the visibility of and opportunities for the advancement of all genders through awareness and education of the various issues relevant to students at CSULB. The Commissioner also works to provide an environment that encourages the well- being, empowerment and success of all genders. Serves as a member of the President’s Cabinet advising on matters related to all genders on campus.

What does this position do?

  • Carries out the vision and goals of the ASI President
  • Attends to matters which pertain to gender equity affairs for the campus community
  • Represents the ASI President as a designee on gender equity events, committees, and/or special circumstances
  • Collaborates with the Women’s and Gender Equity Center (WGEC) to promote and plan events or programs for the student body
  • Raise awareness about issues of sexual assault and gender violence in collaboration with the Title IX Office
  • Advocates for policy change and increased campus resources to empower women, trans, and non-binary identifying students
  • Holds support groups for trans and non-binary identifying students throughout the semester
  • Collaborates with representatives of campus, local, state, and federal governments to support initiatives that promote gender equity

Position Overview:

The Lobby Corps Student-at-Large represents the interests of the student body to the ASI Lobby Corps and serves as a voting member.

What does this position do?

  • Coordinates lobby visits both locally and for the annual California Higher Education Student Summit (CHESS)
  • Conducts legislative research and tracks pertinent legislation concerning nonprofit corporations, auxiliary organizations of the CSU, higher education, and other areas of interest to ASI
  • Represents the Lobby Corps at the annual CHESS Conference in Sacramento
  • Attends and participates in CHESS trainings leading up to the conference
  • Advocates legislation or issues on behalf of CSULB students
  • Coordinates voter registration drives and/or voter education campaigns
  • Assists in the planning of Advocacy Day
  • Track City Council and CSU Board of Trustees policies and initiatives that may impact CSULB students
  • Serves on ASI scholarship review committees as needed

The Social Justice & Equity Committee Student-at-Large represents the interests of historically marginalized and underrepresented communities of the student body to the Social Justice & Equity Committee and serves as a voting member.

  • Serves as the chief programmers for the Committee
  • Coordinates a social justice awareness event during the spring semester
  • Assists with outreach efforts throughout the academic year
  • Assists with the development of Senate resolutions

  • Actively works with the campus community to promote and support equity on campus and build collaborative partnerships

Trustee-At-Large, Isabel Patterson Child Development Center (IPCDC) Board of Trustees

Position Overview:

Serves as a voting member of the Isabel Patterson Child Development Center Board of Trustees (IPCDC BOT), which is responsible for the oversight of an early childhood education and childcare program for the children of CSULB students and for the children of alumni, staff, faculty, and community members as space permits.

What does this position do?

  • Read agendas, meeting minutes, and related materials in preparation for board meetings
  • Review and approve operating policies to ensure compliance with licensing, accreditation bodies and funding terms and conditions Ensure effective organizational planning by actively participating with staff in an annual planning process Review and approve all proposals for new major programs Review and forward all proposals for major interior and exterior construction projects to the Board of Control Receive and act upon periodic evaluations of the IPCDC programs as reported by the IPCDC Director Participate in the review and adjudication of parent grievances
  • Assist the IPCDC Director and ASI development staff in fundraising efforts for the benefit of the IPCDC
  • Develop an understanding of basic licensing, accreditation and funding requirements, terms and conditions
  • Serves on ASI scholarship review committees as needed

What meetings will I have to attend?

  • IPCDC Board of Trustees – 3rd Friday of each month at 1PM
  • Subcommittee meetings (date and times vary)
