In the last few years, the pandemic pushed us to become more isolated and indoors. We were forced to change our understanding of what it means to connect with both people and nature. And it was tough!

But now it’s time that we reconnect with the outside world! Let's go outside and soak up our California sun while we can.

So, here’s what I propose: let’s get reacquainted with nature together! Leave your phone behind, put on some gear and get out there to experience the beauty of Southern California with The Student Recreation and Wellness Center’s (SRWC) Nature Project!

What is the Nature Project? This month-long outdoor activity program aims to help you get back into the great outdoors and win prizes while doing it! Organized on Strava, an app that combines social media with fitness tracking, this program will help keep you and your friends active and entertained.

Here's how it works:
Step 1: Register on the SRWC Go app.
Step 2: Download the Strava app and join the Nature Project Club.
Step 3: Complete the challenges and move your body!

There will be week-long challenges where students will get the opportunity to earn points for completing a specific outdoor activity (biking, hiking, rock climbing, etc.) There will also be weekly challenges every Wednesday where students can receive points for successfully locating an outdoor location on or near campus. Each time you log your outdoor activity on Strava you will receive points. Participants with the most points at the end of the month will win an Outdoor Prize Pack!

So, what are you waiting for? Enjoy that sunshine and rack up those points to win prizes. Not only is this good for your physical health, but with midterms quickly approaching, getting outside will also help your mental health. Let's take all the opportunities we can to boost our mental health and join the SRWC in the Nature Project.

Make the choice to get outside and move this October!
