If you’re looking for an incentive to get in the gym and pursue a healthy lifestyle, how about free tuition? Whether you’ve been checking out the Student Recreation & Wellness Center (SRWC) or not, Owen’s Condition for Tuition is giving students more of a reason to work out.
Owen’s Condition for Tuition is a scholarship program funded by the Owen family since Fall 2011 that has helped encourage thousands of CSULB students attain their fitness goals and achieve a healthy lifestyle. Each student who joins the program must work out for at least 30 minutes and enter each session into the biometrics scanner at the front desk to accumulate points. Students complete the program after submitting 50 entries which automatically enters them into an opportunity drawing to win free tuition. Last year’s Owen’s winner, third year biology major Leah Reyes, is currently enjoying having her tuition paid for.
“I did not anticipate winning at all, but it’s honestly wonderful!” exclaimed Reyes. “I wasn’t going to go to the finale event, although I hit the 50 mark, but my friends made me when I ran into them. When my name was called, I was totally surprised!”
Reyes has been utilizing the SRWC since her second year, regularly attending spin, kickboxing and pilates classes. For her, the SRWC allows the perfect opportunity to de-stress, balance her health and utilize on-campus resources.
“You don’t think about winning, and they give you prizes for hitting the 25-point mark, so it was like, ‘Why not?’” she said. If students like Leah already regularly attend the SRWC, Owen’s can simply be an additional bonus! For others, it can provide the motivation needed to begin pursuing a life of wellness.
“You get to use an amazing gym and could win free tuition over it—that’s a wonderful opportunity!” said Reyes. “It keeps us active and promotes a healthier lifestyle. I didn’t think I was going to win, but I did—and that could be anyone.”
