Women’s History Celebration

March is Women’s History Month and the USU Program Council—in partnership with the Women’s & Gender Equity Center—will be holding a celebration of women’s history, including a panel and movie-showing of “Suffragette.”

“This event gives students the opportunity to be aware of what early protestors had to endure to gain basic rights for women,” said USU Program Council Assistant William Salazar.

The four panel speakers include former Long Beach City Councilmember Gerrie Schipske, CSULB History Professor Pat Cleary, ASI Interim Assistant Director of Leadership & Student Involvement Lindsay San Miguel and ASI Secretary for Women’s & Gender Affairs Alex Bellenger. The panel will be followed with the movie “Suffragette” —a historical drama about early 20th century British activists fighting for the suffragette movement against an increasingly brutal state.

The movie will highlight the early beginnings of the suffragette movement, while the panel discussion will provide an opportunity to hear about women’s issues from a current-day, on-campus standpoint. “As a student, I’m interested in gaining more knowledge about the history and present-day status of women’s issues in this country,” said Salazar.

The event will be held on Wednesday, March 16, in the USU Beach Auditorium and will begin at 6 p.m. Doors will open at 5:30 p.m.
