If you’re looking for an incentive to get in the gym and pursue a healthy lifestyle, how about free tuition? Whether you’ve been checking out the Student Recreation & Wellness Center (SRWC) or not, Owen’s Condition for Tuition is giving students more of a reason to get into gear.
Owen’s Condition for Tuition is a scholarship program funded by the Owen family since 2011 and has helped encourage thousands of CSULB students attain their fitness goals and achieve a healthy lifestyle. Each student who joins the program must work out for at least 30 minutes and enter each session into the biometrics scanner at the front desk to accumulate points. Students complete the program after submitting 50 entries which automatically enters them into an opportunity drawing to win free tuition. Last semester’s Owen’s winner, Ryan Sueme is currently doing his graduate studies in organic chemistry and enjoying his tuition paid for.
“This lifted a huge weight off my shoulders!” Ryan exclaimed. “I was legitimately scared to take out more loans on top of undergrad debt, but the Owen family’s generous gift provided massive financial relief and allows me to focus more on school and my work on campus.”
Ryan also performs research for a professor and works as a chemistry administrative assistant, where he assists incoming chemistry students. For him, a visit to the SRWC is like therapy. He enjoys running, playing tennis and lifting weights, and he wants to help promote student wellness. He thinks of his Owen’s Condition for Tuition win with a pay-it-forward mentality.
“I’m extremely grateful to have won,” he said. “I’d love to make a similar donation or help expand the program in the future if I become successful! I wish we had more money to hand out to students, because I know it’s not easy to pursue a life of wellness with a rigorous academic schedule.”
