Celebrating the Life of MLK, Jr.

On Tuesday, Feb. 23, for the 17th consecutive year, CSULB students and staff will gather to honor Martin Luther King, Jr., the renowned minister, activist and leader in the African-American Civil Rights Movement.

This annual event presents a time for honoring MLK Jr., his mission and his legacy. The event will encompass the singing of “The Black National Anthem,” poetry, an essay competition and keynote speakers on the topic of “Peace in Diversity,” this year’s theme for the celebration.

“We want to look back at the progression that MLK’s activism has led to,” said communications studies major Megann Jenkins. “We do that by acknowledging the past as a whole and evaluating our status at this very moment. We want to see how well we’re working together and how much peace and diversity we have accomplished.”

Written pieces from the late Afrocentric psychiatrist Francis Kress Welfing will also be featured.

The celebration will take place in the USU Ballrooms on Tuesday, Feb. 23, from noon to 1 p.m.
