Welcome almost back to the Beach, Long Beach State! Whether this will be your first time on campus or you’re returning, Associated Students, Inc. is excited to welcome you with fun events, opportunities to get caught up with student life and, of course, a ton of free stuff!
First up is Smorgasport 2018! That’s right, our annual kickoff carnival is back and as big as ever! Leading the school year in true festival style, Smorgasport 2018 will be packed with everything from student organizations, round-up rides, food trucks, inflatable games, dance performances and more.
The event will take place the week before the first day of classes on Friday, August 24 from 7 to 11 p.m. The first 1,000 attendees will receive a free complimentary T-shirt, so be sure to get there early! More info will be available at www.asicsulb.org/smorgasport as the event nears.
Second up is the LBSU-spirit-themed Week of Welcome (WoW)! This biannual event is the perfect opportunity for students to check out hundreds of the clubs and organizations on campus and connect with their members.
“I found out about ASI and Beach Pride Events through Week of Welcome, and now it’s very near to my heart,” said Jonathan Ibarra, fifth year liberal studies major and lead program assistant for Beach Pride Events. “It allowed me to get really involved on campus, rather than just coming and leaving. I can honestly say I met so many of my closest friends because of WoW.”
Last year about 250 clubs filled the Central Quad, packed with music, table games, free goodies and thousands of circulating students. This year, the event will take place Wednesday, Sept. 5 and Thursday, September 6 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Central Quad.
“Even if you’re not actively searching for a club, you should go and see what it is,” said Ibarra. “At first, it was definitely something I wasn’t sure I wanted to be a part of. But now I’m so glad I’m a part of it!”
