ASI Exec Officer Recommendations: The President’s Preferences

Published: Thursday, 16 April 2020

You might know that Liz Velasquez is your ASI president, but did you know that she also has a great taste in TV shows? In fact, her favorite shows are in such wide variety that they need to be divided in to three groups: family dramas, fantasy and political dramas. Check out what your president recommends!

Family Dramas – “Gilmore Girls,” “On My Block” and “La Casa de las Flores”
In some way or another, most of us have experienced our own familial issues – that's what makes these shows so relatable and interesting to watch. “Gilmore Girls” is great for those who enjoy witty dialogue and colorful pop culture references dispersed throughout a meaningful story about family connections and personal growth.

“On My Block” hits close to home with an inner-city Los Angeles setting featuring four teens bridging the gap to adulthood. This show features communities and people that are often underrepresented, and it does so in a charming, down-to-Earth way.

Lastly, “La Casa de las Flores” brings a darker tone to the dysfunctional family format. The series digs into issues such as internalized homophobia and transphobia while subverting traditional stereotypes of race, class and sexuality. If you’re looking for a dark comedy that will make you laugh and cry at the same time, this one’s for you.

Fantasy – “Chilling Adventures of Sabrina” and “The Seven Deadly Sins”
Liz also enjoys the occasional get-away, which is exactly what fantasy is meant for. Now more than ever, we could all enjoy a bit of a break by watching these shows. For starters, “Chilling Adventures of Sabrina” pulls you into a world of supernatural beings, mortals and everything in between, including Sabrina. Follow her story as she reconciles her dual identity as half-witch, half mortal. At the end of the day, her story is relatable for many of us.

“The Seven Deadly Sins” is a thrilling story of knights and kingdom warfare in old Britannia. Fire up the show on Netflix and follow Elizabeth on her quest to find the only people who can protect her family from the Holy Knights. Those who enjoy classic stories of good vs evil will love this show!

Political Dramas – “Madam Secretary” and “The West Wing”
Liz is a woman of class, and as such, she enjoys shows that reflect the fast-paced thrill and intricacy of politics, both old and new. “Madam Secretary” demonstrates the high-stakes stress of international diplomacy and office politics through the lens of Secretary of State Elizabeth McCord, portrayed by Téa Leoni. Her strong performance guides the series as she navigates her way through the exceedingly competitive modern-day Capitol.

Meanwhile, “The West Wing” is a window into “old politics.” The show is legendary for its spectacular writing and outstanding performances, and, as Liz will tell you, it won’t disappoint. Let the episodes roll and watch as President Bartlet and his administration tackle the tough issues from D.C. – both political and personal.
