It’s the season of giving! No, unfortunately it’s not the holidays yet, but it’s never too early to help the people around you. Take the time to look around Long Beach and on-campus organizations that aim to help others within the community.

Recently, the city-wide fundraising campaign, Long Beach Gives, kicked off their early giving period on Sept. 12. This organization helps Long Beach nonprofits raise money and awareness for their communities. They represent a variety of participating nonprofits that people can donate to; one of which might sound familiar.

Our very own Laurén Chalmers ‘83 Beach Pantry has been accepting donations through Long Beach Gives, in hopes to help students facing food insecurity. This program supplies food, toiletries, school supplies and produce to The Beach. As a nonprofit, the pantry relies heavily on donations from local community partnerships. Fundraising is what keeps this program the official food pantry for Long Beach State University (LBSU) students.

An extension of the pantry is the ASI Beach Kitchen, which promotes culinary and nutritional skills for students. They use food and produce from the pantry to create fun events like Pass the Plate or Back to the Beach Breakfast. The ASI Beach Kitchen gives students opportunities to gain essential life skills like cooking and meal planning.

Both programs cater to thousands of students each year, emphasizing their need for donations. Last year, the Laurén Chalmers ‘83 Beach Pantry raised $3,363 through fundraising with Long Beach Gives. Every donation makes a difference!

Sept. 19 is the last day to donate to your favorite nonprofit with Long Beach Gives. It’s not too late to lend a helping hand. Visit the pantry’s Long Beach Gives donation site to show your support! Help combat food and housing insecurity with the Laurén Chalmers ‘83 Beach Pantry!
