Welcome to another year at the Beach! As your 2016 – 2017 ASI student body president I’m excited to welcome you to another year of working together to create positive changes on our campus.
If you haven’t met my team and me yet, just look at the picture above! I’m accompanied by ASI Vice President Logan Vournas, Treasurer Giovanni Smith and Chief of Staff Matthew Argame. We’ve been hard at work planning and strategizing for the coming year, and we’re tremendously excited to share our ideas and plans with you.
First off, we’re opening our new ASI Beach Pantry to combat food insecurity on campus and give all students the opportunity to succeed. After seeing that 21% of CSU students are food insecure, we partnered with the university to respond to this need and have since become the third CSU to have an official food pantry.
Another goal of ours is to promote and ensure sustainability on our campus. We plan to do this by partnering with Sustain U, giving students more of an opportunity to get involved in sustainable activities and reforming our existing departments and structures to have more of an emphasis on sustainability.
And finally, as representatives of the student body, we want to advocate for student needs. That’s why my team and I are putting aside a part of our stipend to create a scholarship for students. As a first generation student and the first in my family to go to college, I understand that everyone needs a little help to succeed—and we are happy to give you that help.
ASI exists because of the likes of you: the students. It’s our privilege to serve as your representatives, and because it’s your voice that needs to be heard, please feel free to visit us in USU-311. We want to meet you and work together to see yet another great year come to pass.
Go Beach!
