The University Student Union (USU) is gearing up for a major transformation! That means that we are preparing for some minor disruptions this semester as we get ready for the full closure in August! As the first phase of construction quickly approaches, we want to make sure you know the ins and outs of getting around campus, including some insider information on detours and re-routes. You’re sure to be a certified legend with these tips and tricks amongst your peers and professors.
Right now, ASI is working with our campus partners to update the Interactive Campus Map, which will show you exactly where your favorite food vendors and on campus resources will be relocated. Until then, visit the Future U website for the latest information on relocation sites.

April
Starting April 14, students travelling from lower to upper campus can expect to be re-routed due to construction on the Friendship Walk Stairs. This first phase of construction, which will be completed by Aug. 30, will focus on enhancing ADA-accessible pathways that will serve the campus community while the full building undergoes construction. These ADA enhancements are a response to extensive feedback we received about the difficulty of navigating from upper to lower campus. We heard from you, and we are excited that these pathways will serve as permanent accessible features for future generations of Long Beach State University (LBSU) students.
To get around during construction, pedestrian traffic will be redirected through the Central Plant ramp and through the doors on the east side of the building near Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf. In the map below, the accessible pathways are marked in blue.
MayOur big relocation efforts start the week after finals! ASI departments, services and resources will begin our big migration to various locations around campus, with most departments being centrally located in either Peterson Hall 1 (PH1) or Faculty Offices 5 (FO5).
Minor site construction will take place on the lawns near Health and Human Services 1 (HHS1), Fine Arts 1 (FA1) and PH1 to prepare for the installation of temporary food trailers. This preparation work is expected to be completed by Aug. 1.
AugustThe USU will remain open for most of the summer and construction fencing will start to go up in the beginning of August. Some of the USU food vendors will remain operational in their current locations until Aug. 15. And don’t fret, The Nugget Grill & Pub will remain at its usual spot until December 2025.
We understand that construction can be disruptive, and we appreciate your patience as we work to improve our USU. This project is a significant investment in the student experience, and we are committed to minimizing inconvenience while maximizing the long-term benefits. We are confident that the revitalization of the USU will be a source of pride for The Beach community.
