Get an ‘A’ in Self-Care

College can be a lot sometimes and that’s why it’s important to set aside some “you” time for self-care. With so many things going on at once as a college student, we want you to know that there are many resources on campus to help you maintain your personal wellness goals!

For example, the Student Recreation and Wellness Center (SRWC) offers a variety of resources that promote a holistic approach to wellness. Not only does it have the latest gym equipment, but it also offers personal training and group exercise classes for all students. Within the SRWC we also have Beach Balance, which emphasizes the importance of personal well-being by offering nutrition counseling, several self-assessment tools and various workshops focused on health education.

What’s more, Beach Balance has two locations, one conveniently located in the SRWC and another one on the third floor of the University Student Union (USU). Feel free to stop by to engage in a variety of activities offered throughout the week such as resting on a hammock at SRWC Beach Balance on Tranquil Tuesdays or booking a massage on one of our USU Beach Balance massage chairs!

Other great resources on campus are the Student Health Services (SHS) clinic and Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS). These are great resources to keep your mental and physical health in check. SHS offers services related to medical and sexual health, as well as a variety of wellness programs such as Yoga for Healing, Body Positivity, Stress Less workshops and nutrition services.

Alternatively, CAPS has mental health resources including, but not limited to, short-term individual counseling sessions and group therapy sessions that can provide much needed support during difficult times. CAPS even has a case manager who can help connect you to community resources. Schedule a group preview appointment to join a group counseling session or schedule an initial consultation for individual counseling by calling 562-985-4001 or visiting their office at Brotman Hall 226.

However, if you need immediate support, please do not hesitate to reach out to the CAPS Crisis Intervention counselors. They are available in person and by phone during regular CAPS’ office hours as well as by phone after hours.

Self-care is a priority on our campus, and as such, we have a variety of interactive self-care events coming up this semester at Beach Balance! You could even win a prize by filling out one of our Beach Balance stamp cards by using our resources and attending our events now until March 11.

Looking for ways to de-stress? We encourage you to visit our Wellness rooms located at either Beach Balance location, or to drop by our weekly Yoga for Mental Health class on Thursdays from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the SRWC in Farber Fitness Room.
