CSULB Runs With Vets

Long Beach, Calif. - October 27, 2014 - Put on your best running gear because ASI and Veterans Services invite you to the Veterans 5K event on Nov. 9 at 9:30 a.m. The starting line will begin at the College of Business Administration on the campus of California State University, Long Beach. The event will open with the national anthem, followed by the 5K, consisting of two laps on campus.

Wendy Lewis, secretary of veteran affairs, mentioned that this is the first time ASI has hosted a Veterans 5K event. "I'm so excited to give tribute to all the veterans that have given their time, energy, and life," she said. "This event is to honor veterans and connect students with our veteran community."

Lewis explained that some of the older CSULB student veterans feel like they don't connect or fit in with other students on campus and would like to feel more involved. "Staying in shape and maintaining healthy lifestyles is something they both have in common, so this run will give them the opportunity to share that common ground," she said.

Leah Sakacs, graduate student and president of the Veterans Network, states that the campus and local communities will be coming together in an effort to support and encourage the veterans at California State University, Long Beach. "This run will also create awareness of the veteran student population," he said.

Sakacs also encourages students to participate in this event, whether it is by running, walking or cheering from the sidelines. "As any student, veterans are working hard to have a successful collegiate career; however, for many veterans that struggle is complicated by adjusting to a new life," he said. "Students who attend this run will be showing their peers that camaraderie still exists and that they are there to offer support."

The registration fee is $25, which includes parking. The last day to register will be on Thursday, Nov. 6. Registration tables will be on campus on Oct. 28 and Nov. 4 at 2 p.m. in front of the Multicultural Center and during the Veterans Ceremony at the Speakers Platform on Nov. 6 at 5 p.m.

This event is open to the public and the first 100 people who register will receive an event T-shirt and other goodies.
